A NAME UNKNOWN by Roseanna M. White
Bethany House Publishers
4 star ratingMy Highly Caffeinated Thought: A delightful historical novel with fun characters and a bit on intrigue on the side.

The first book in the Shadows Over England series is exactly what I think of when I want to read a historical fiction novel. The eloquence of the author’s writing coupled with the all the details of the time period instantly transport the reader to Edwardian Britain. White has a true gift for developing witty and charming characters that come to life within the pages of this book.

a name unknown

I will be honest. I don’t normally read the Christian historical genre and I was tentative at first to read the book. However, the characters and story were so good that I just took the spiritual and religious aspects in the narrative as another element of the who these people were.

All in all, this was a wonderful first book in the series. I cannot wait to read what Willa will be up to in the next one.

Plot Summary

A NAME UNKNOWN coverRosemary Gresham has no family beyond the band of former urchins that helped her survive as a girl in the mean streets of London. Grown now, they concentrate on stealing high-value items and have learned how to blend into upper-class society. But when Rosemary must determine whether a certain wealthy gentleman is loyal to Britain or to Germany, she is in for the challenge of a lifetime. How does one steal a family's history, their very name?

Peter Holstein, given his family's German blood, writes his popular series of adventure novels under a pen name. With European politics boiling and his own neighbors suspicious of him, Peter debates whether it might be best to change his name for good. When Rosemary shows up at his door pretending to be a historian and offering to help him trace his family history, his question might be answered.

But as the two work together and Rosemary sees his gracious reaction to his neighbors' scornful attacks, she wonders if her assignment is going down the wrong path. Is it too late to help him prove that he's more than his name?

About the Author: Roseanna M. White pens her novels beneath her Betsy Ross flag, with her Jane Austen action figure watching over her. When not writing fiction, she’s homeschooling her two children, editing and designing, and pretending her house will clean itself. Roseanna is the author of a slew of historical novels and novellas, ranging from biblical fiction to American-set romances to her new British series. Spies and war and mayhem always seem to make their way into her novels…to offset her real life, which is blessedly boring.

Being educated at St. John’s Collete (the Great Books School) taught Roseanna to ask questions, to value conversation, and to never accept the simple answer without exploring it for herself. She and her family make their home in the mountains of West Virginia where she and her husband both grew up. Roseanna is a member of ACFW, a frequent speaker at writers events and also small groups of readers, and an unabashed email addict. To find out more, visit her website.

Book Review for GARDEN OF LAMENTATIONS by Deborah Crombie

GARDEN OF LAMENTATIONS by Deborah CrombieSeries: Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James Novels (Book 17)  William Morrow Paperbacks  My Highly Caffeinated Thought: An in-depth mystery with complicated webs of lies, secrets, and murder.  GARDEN OF LAMENTATIONS is the 17th book in the Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James series. Though this book is the first I have ever read by the author, I have heard good things about the previous novels. I will be honest with you all, there is a lot going on in this story. Sometimes things got a bit confusing and I had to go back and read a passage or two in order to regain the plot.

Cultivating a Creative Culture

I recently had the chance to read Justin Dauer’s latest book CULTIVATING A CREATIVE CULTURE. The book centers around the premise that when dealing with employees having a human first attitude is key, especially creatives. By having an environment that is more open to embracing the person with all that they offer rather than filling the position, you may be surprised at what you get in return.
